Era: 70s a black pleated skirt from the barbara turner collection, kept folded inside one of barbara's own stockings for decades (pictured), which is why the pleats have held their shape so precisely. that's a detail worth sitting with: most vintage pleating this sharp comes from careful pressing or specialized storage forms, this one survived simply because of how, and where, barbara chose to keep it. cut in an a-line with real movement, closed with hook-and-eye at the side. heavy-duty loops at either side suggest this piece may have started life as a costume, consistent with a few other pieces in the collection. polyester, fiber content otherwise unconfirmed. barbara turner trained in couture on grosvenor street, at an atelier on one of london's most storied fashion addresses. she made flying suits during the war, dressed actresses in the west end, and built a working life around clothes that had to perform, not just look good. she kept pieces from every stage of that life, on stage and off, and wore them until they showed it. this collection is what she made and wore across that life, sourced directly through her family. each one carries its own history: a specific fabric, a finish, a repair, a choice she made at the time.
