Era: 1960s a cream wool crepe dress and jacket from the barbara turner collection, est. 1960s, believed to be the suit barbara was married in. the buttons are worked in a celtic knot, a motif traditionally associated with marriage. the cut is what sets this set apart. the dress has an asymmetrical lapel, and with the jacket layered over the top, the front becomes something unusual. the jacket is cut with an extreme taper to define the waist, while the dress falls into an easy a-line. the dress closes with a zipper at the front and a hook and eye. barbara turner trained in couture on grosvenor street, at an atelier on one of london's most storied fashion addresses. she made flying suits during the war, dressed actresses in the west end, and built a working life around clothes that had to perform, not just look good. she kept pieces from every stage of that life, on stage and off, and wore them until they showed it. this collection is what she made and wore across that life, sourced directly through her family. each one carries its own history: a specific fabric, a finish, a repair, a choice she made at the time.
