about the pieces
are these items authentic?
yes, every piece is personally sourced and authenticated by the other matters atelier team. provenance, labels, construction, and condition are carefully verified before any piece is listed.
how do you describe condition?
each listing includes a condition note describing exactly what we found: fabric, hardware, lining, closures, any visible wear. we use four general tiers as shorthand:
- worn well: beautiful overall condition. small marks or age consistent with a full life in a wardrobe. nothing that changes how it wears.
- gently marked: visible wear. a mark, a loose stitch, a soft spot at a seam. still wearable, still intact.
- as found: no restoration or alteration. wear is visible and part of the piece's story.
- archive only: condition limits wear. suited to display, study, or careful restoration, and we'll always say so plainly.
beyond the tier, we document the specifics in the listing itself i.e. where a mark is, whether it's visible when worn, whether a repair was made and by whom. these are archival garments, and what we don't do is hide their age.
are measurements included?
yes. every listing includes precise flat measurements. we recommend comparing these directly to a garment you already own and love for the most accurate fit assessment.
where do these pieces come from?
every piece is sourced directly, most often through paris trips or through direct relationships with the families and estates connected to a garment's original owner. some collections center on a single wardrobe or maker; others are gathered piece by piece. we'll always tell you a piece's specific story where we know it.
what is the barbara turner collection?
barbara turner's personal wardrobe, roughly thirty-five pieces, plus her original paper patterns came to other matters through her family. barbara trained in couture on grosvenor street, made flying suits during the war, and dressed actresses in the west end across a working life in clothing. this collection is what she made and wore, not a curated resale selection.
were the pieces in a named collection made by one person?
when a collection centers on a single maker's wardrobe, yes, every piece traces back to that one person's hand across a working life in clothing. what varies is the piece itself: a garment made early in a career looks different from one made decades later, a formal commission differs from something made for daily wear. no two pieces are alike, each reflects a specific choice made at the time, a fabric, a finish, a fix. that individuality, one maker across many pieces and years, is what we're preserving.
how do you verify a piece's history?
provenance comes through the people connected to a garment, its family, and supporting documentation where it exists: patterns, photographs, records. where useful, we also work with academic and archival contacts to help place pieces in context. we note what's confirmed and what's likely but unconfirmed. we'd rather be honest about the gap than overstate a claim.
ordering and shipping
where do you ship?
we currently ship within the united states and we now ship internationally to the EU, UK, and Canada.
international shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your location and package weight. customs duties and import taxes may apply and are the responsibility of the buyer. delivery times vary by destination, typically 7–21 business days via USPS. for questions about your international order, contact us at other@othermattersatelier.com.
how much does shipping cost?

how long does shipping take?
orders are typically processed within 1–3 business days and shipped via USPS. you'll receive tracking information once your order is on its way.
are packages insured?
yes, every shipment is insured for the full value of the piece while it's in transit.
what happens once my order ships?
once a package leaves our hands, it's in the carrier's. we'll always get you a tracking number, but delivery timing, delays, and handling from that point are between you and USPS (or the international carrier for orders outside the US). if something looks off in transit, the fastest path is contacting the carrier directly with your tracking number.
what if my package is marked delivered but i can't find it?
first, check with neighbors or a building's front desk or mailroom, packages sometimes get set aside. if it still doesn't turn up, contact the carrier directly using your tracking number to file a claim. we're glad to help point you in the right direction, but once a package is marked delivered, the carrier's investigation is the next step.
what if my package is returned to sender?
if a package comes back to us because of an incorrect address, a missed delivery window, or a refusal, we're happy to reship it, but the cost of shipping it out again is the buyer's responsibility.
a note on shipping
we insure every order and choose carriers we trust, but once a piece leaves the atelier, its journey is largely out of our hands. we're not able to take responsibility for packages lost in transit or marked delivered but not received; those situations need to go through the carrier directly. we're always here to help you figure out next steps.
returns and care
what is your return policy?
because every piece at other matters is one of a kind, all sales are final. we encourage you to review measurements, condition notes, and photographs carefully before purchasing. if you have any questions about a specific piece, reach out before buying. we're happy to help.
can i ask questions before i buy?

how should i care for an archival piece?
handle gently. these are archival garments, more delicate than modern clothing, and some carry original hardware or trims worth protecting. store away from direct light and humidity, ideally on a padded hanger or flat if structure requires it. if a piece needs cleaning or repair, we recommend a conservator experienced with vintage and couture-era construction rather than a standard dry cleaner. happy to point you toward resources if it's helpful.

other matters is a los angeles-based archive, founded by a fashion designer with over a decade of industry experience. pieces are personally sourced, most often through paris, and brought back to los angeles, chosen for their craft, character, and ability to hold meaning over time.
how do you choose what to bring into the archive?
each collection starts with a piece, a wardrobe, or a maker worth paying attention to. sometimes that's a single found garment, sometimes it's a fuller story, like an individual's working wardrobe across a lifetime. what stays the same across every collection is the standard: real craft, real history, and a piece's story told as accurately as we can tell it.
